Ideally, you want to provide surplus solar energy for dark days. This isn’t common yet, but it’s definitely possible in the future, according to Weber. “With larger batteries, you can store the electricity for later. Then you can use the energy generated during the day in the evening. This can be done with your electric car battery, for example.”
With just a battery, beating winter will still be a challenge. The best alternative, according to Weber, is green hydrogen. “Hydrogen is a carrier of energy. Solar or wind energy is converted into hydrogen that can be used at a later time.”
He also believes that we must not forget that energy should not only come from the sun. “In the changing Netherlands we have to focus on the sun and the wind. They complement each other well. It often blows when the sun doesn’t shine and vice versa. It’s about a good mix of energy from the sun and wind, and yes, unfortunately also a fossil at the moment. We really need to get rid of them as quickly as possible.”
