A former US ambassador has been arrested on charges of spying for Cuba. AP 73-year-old Manuel Rocha is reportedly suspected of passing sensitive information to the Cuban government.

Rocha’s arrest follows a long-running investigation by the FBI. The security service believes that Rocha was an “agent” of the Cuban government.

Rocha was arrested in Miami on Friday and will appear in court on Monday. The US Department of Justice will argue that Rocha puts Cuba’s interests above those of the United States. Rocha will likely be charged with lobbying, but he could also be charged with treason.

According to the US Constitution, the penalty for treason is death. This is less than thirty times in the entire history of the United States It happened.

Rocha served as US Ambassador to Bolivia from July 2000 to August 2002. During his diplomatic career he also served in Cuba and other countries in South and Central America.

The United States and Cuba restored diplomatic relations in 2015. They had been broken since 1961 as a result of the Cold War. Despite the strengthening of relations, relations between the two countries remain tense.
