Apple has released the first beta of iOS 17.5. This is the version that allows users in the EU to install apps from developer sites.

The first beta version was launched on Tuesday evening, 9to5Mac reports. Based on releases in previous years, the site believes that Apple will release the stable version sometime next month. iOS 17.5 introduces Web Distribution, which allows EU users to use the feature mandated by the EU Digital Markets Act to install apps from developer sites.

Currently, this only applies to “certified developers.” Apple will provide them with APIs through which they can distribute their applications across the web. Developers must be members of the Apple Developer Program for at least two years and active in the European Union. They must also be in good standing within this program and have an iOS app that has received more than 1 million “initial installs” within the EU in the past calendar year. Currently, iOS apps can only be distributed through app stores, such as the Apple App Store, or upcoming third-party alternative app stores.

Only iOS users within the European Union will soon be able to download individual apps via websites. Apple has previously opened its platform to alternative app stores, although the tech giant still imposes controversial requirements. According to the DMA, developers may also link to alternative payment methods for in-app purchases.
