Keith Rosenkranz, 64 years old, retired at the end of last February, after 33 years spent as a pilot with the American company Delta Airlines. On his final trip, he invited family, friends, colleagues and neighbors, whom he took with him on a 24-hour trip to the American island nation.

“We canceled a lot of flights to Europe at that time. One of my friends could only fly from Atlanta to Orlando and back. He got one ticket for his wife, and that was it.”
Rosenkranz, who flew for the U.S. Air Force before starting out as a commercial pilot, got an employee discount when renting a plane, but he still had to pay big for his farewell.

The trip cost him a “good yearly salary,” but he says it was more than worth it. “Being able to do something so big is actually priceless, like this quick trip with family and friends. And you don’t want to be the richest guy in the cemetery.”
In Hawaii, he renewed his marriage vows, among other things. He now enjoys a well-deserved retirement, even though he never considered his job as a pilot to be work. “I always say I haven’t worked since 1983, when I worked in a supermarket. After that, I only got paid for flying.”
