Virginia RB Perris Jones is recovering after spinal surgery

Virginia running back Perris Jones underwent spinal surgery at the University of Louisville Medical Center on Friday, a day after he was injured in the Cavaliers’ 31-24 loss to Louisville.

in Statement sent to XThe school said the surgery was successful and Jones was able to walk briefly Saturday morning.

Virginia said Jones remains under observation and will be transferred to the Frazier Rehabilitation Institute in Louisville for further care when his medical team deems it appropriate. A Virginia official had previously announced that Jones was suffering from movement in all of his limbs.

Jones, a senior from Alexandria, Va., was injured after catching a pass late in the third quarter Thursday night. He fumbled on the play and fell forward into a pile of multiple Louisville players. Because the play occurred near the Louisville sideline, Cardinals coaches immediately ran out to help. Cavaliers wide receiver Malik Washington picked up the fumble and scored a touchdown.

Virginia players, some crying, knelt down and watched in stunned silence. Jones is roommates with teammate Mike Hollins, who survived a shooting that killed three teammates last November. Monday marks the one-year anniversary of the deaths of Devin Chandler, LaVell Davis Jr. and DeShaun Perry.

Jones was eventually placed on a gurney, completely paralyzed. Hollins, who has Perry’s No. 41 on the white tape he wears on the back of his arms, was among the players who approached the cart before it set off.

“It’s a very difficult reality for the sport that we play, that every game can end this way, and you don’t wish that on anyone,” Virginia coach Tony Elliott said after the game. “Man, I know one thing: [Jones] He’s a tough guy and he puts it on the line every time he steps out for this football team. [We’re] Believe and pray for complete recovery. “I put that in the Lord’s hands, and I ask that in advance, and I believe that will be the case.”
