Highlights, updates and analysis of the rematch between Islam Makhachev and Alex Volkanovski; Makhachev outperforms Usman

Expect fireworks on Saturday in the main event of UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi, where lightweight champion Islam Makhachev will take on featherweight champion Alex Volkanovski in a rematch of the Fight of the Year nominee from earlier this year. The two champions went head-to-head at UFC 284 on February 11 in Australia, but it was Makhachev who won the hotly contested bout via unanimous decision and retained his lightweight title.

On Saturday, Volkanovski will get another chance to become a two-division champion after Makhachev’s original rival, Charles Oliveira, withdrew due to an injury he sustained during training. Volkanovski told Yahoo Sports that he accepted the fight with only 11 days’ notice, so that “his picture will be on people’s walls one day.”

The co-main event also features the short-notice substitution of former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, who replaced Paulo Costa, who was injured by staph, against unbeaten Khamzat Chimaev at 180 pounds. Usman will make his middleweight debut after accepting the Chimaev fight in just 10 days.
