The military government in Burkina Faso announced that it had thwarted a coup attempt. A statement by the military council said that the coup attempt occurred on Tuesday. What exactly happened is not said.

Four people suspected of involvement in the coup attempt were arrested. A government spokesman said an investigation was underway to find two more people who “wanted to plunge our country into chaos.” The suspected coup attempt comes a day after demonstrators took to the streets of the capital, Ouagadougou, to express their support for the transitional government.

The current government in Burkina Faso came to power last year through a coup. President Damiba, who in turn staged a coup early last year, was impeached. There is dissatisfaction in the West African country over the way jihadist groups from neighboring Mali are being combated.

The junta says it plans to hold elections next year, and Burkina Faso is expected to have a democratically elected government again from July.
