In Sweden, three people were injured on Saturday as a result of a landslide on a highway north of Gothenburg. The road that runs between the Norwegian capital, Oslo, and the second largest city in Sweden, was severely damaged.
The landslide occurred on the night of Friday into Saturday near the town of Stennongsund, 50 kilometers from Gothenburg. The pictures show the extent of the destruction to large parts of the E6 highway, in addition to the surrounding area. Buildings in the area were also damaged.
How a landslide could happen is according to public radio SVT Nyheter Not clear. However, police opened an investigation because explosions occurred at a nearby construction site. The E6 route is one of the most important connecting points between Norway, Sweden and the rest of Europe. The road is expected to remain closed for a long time.
“The worst-hit parts of the affected area are approximately 150 x 100 metres. However, in total the landslide affected an area of ​​approximately 700 x 200 metres,” Gothenburg Rescue Services said in a statement.
Many road users ended up with their vehicles in potholes caused by the landslide. Firefighters helped people get out of cars. A helicopter was also deployed. All have now been released. The three people sustained minor injuries.
