Toyota supplies almost all of its models with hybrid technology. This makes the Prius seem to have lost its initially unique position in the range after a quarter of a century. As a PHEV, they still see enough right to exist at Toyota for an all-new fifth generation. How does that work in practice?
Is the new Toyota Prius bigger than its predecessor?
Yes and no. Where we usually see the new model as being slightly larger than its predecessor, the opposite is the case with the new Prius. Generation 5 is 4.6 cm shorter than its predecessor and 5.0 cm lower. However, it has become 2.0 cm wider and the distance between the front and rear axle has increased by 5.0 cm. The latter is interesting, because this one is straightforward Determine the legroom. Up front you also have more than enough room in all directions when you’re a little taller. We just would like slightly longer seat cushions, which are too short and therefore offer little support. There is also enough legroom in the back. Even if you, as a tall person, are sitting behind a seat that has been adjusted for you, your knees will not touch the back of the driver’s seat. However, the headroom is pathetic. Even with medium stature, you’re already stuck in the back seat under the sloping roof. Partly because the battery pack has moved from under the luggage compartment floor to under the rear seat, boot volume has increased by 33 litres, so that it now stands at 284 litres, which is actually unfortunately little for a car of these proportions. The view back isn’t you either. Those who appreciate this can convert their rearview mirror into a rear camera display in no time at all. Suddenly you see a lot. The disadvantage is that your eyes have to focus very quickly.
Does the petrol engine keep squealing when the accelerator pedal is depressed?
The latest version is only sold as a plug-in hybrid in Europe. With the new powertrain, the Prius has taken a huge step forward. In the previous version, the maximum system power was 122 hp. Now only the petrol engine (from now on a 2.0-liter four-cylinder according to the Atkinson principle) is already really good for 152 hp, while an additional 163 hp has been added electrically. As a result, the Version 5’s output peaks at 223 horsepower. This ensures that the car responds dynamically to the accelerator pedal and, if desired, takes off well. But most importantly, the engines have enough reserves at the bottom when the accelerator pedal is depressed, so that the petrol engine no longer immediately swings towards the rev limiter, but is very comfortable.
How do you charge the battery?
You can charge the battery in three ways. The capacity of the battery pack is 13.6 kWh. Initially, Toyota stated you should be able to travel 69 kilometers with this, and the Japanese now say, according to WLTP, that it’s even enough for an electric range of 86 kilometers. You can charge the battery at an AC charging station or charging box at a maximum of 3.3 kW. That’s not much, a dead battery takes less than four hours to get fully charged again. You can also order the Prius with a roof full of solar panels. On a sunny day, according to Toyota, you can then gather enough power for 8 kilometers in EV mode. By the way, the car also has a charging mode in which the battery is charged while driving. Then you drive on petrol engine only and it is very furious. That’s a bit of a shame. Nice is the link between the camera system and the accelerator. When you let go of the gas, it precisely applies the brakes to the engine, and if the system detects a car ahead, it automatically brakes the engine harder.
How do you steer the new Prius?
For the new Prius, Toyota has developed the TNGA platform (which we also know from Corolla). The result is a car with a multi-link rear axle that can be steered through traffic with great agility. We have no idea for a moment that the chassis can’t handle the increased driving forces. And without compromising on comfort even for a moment.
Plus minus
- +Live payment system
- +Nice structure
- –Very little headroom in the back
- –Small luggage compartment
to rule
The base price of the new Prius hybrid is 44,695 euros. For that money, you’re getting seriously upgraded technology, but unfortunately you’ll still get limited headroom in the back and a much smaller luggage compartment than standard. This car is not suitable as a taxi.
