The AI ​​revolution is a revolution bigger than the invention of the computer itself. So says digital entrepreneur Bert Hubert at BNR Nexus. “I think the things that are possible with AI are so impressive that we can’t hold developers to guidelines.”

Hubert points to the fact that it is very difficult to impose regulations on AI and its development. “Now we’re trying to do that with European AI law, which has very nice stuff in it,” he says. “But just like with the GPDR — the Privacy Guidelines — we will have regulation, but we won’t force Americans, for example, to comply with it.”

This is crooked, Hubert says. “Because we obligate swimming clubs to the GDPR, but not Facebook.” Therefore, he suspects that all kinds of “American or Chinese magic solutions” will appear, which can read articles or prepare insurance reports. “And our regulations won’t be able to handle that.”

Hubert isn’t afraid of the full doomsday scenario, though he’d prefer to see a more optimistic AI world in front of him. As an example, he cites the book The Diamond Age by Neil Stephenson. “They’ve made books on AI in it, and they teach people all kinds of things,” Hubert continues. Everyone has their own teacher who always has time for you, so everyone can really learn what they want to learn. I would like us to pay attention to these positive things, rather than just thinking about doomsday scenarios.

That is why Hubert calls on people working with artificial intelligence to abandon ideas about surveillance drones and focus on textbook projects and projects that support the world of medicine, for example.

And we’re really working hard on that. For example, AI can predict the shape of certain proteins, Hubert says. “This is outrageous,” he says. “There’s no way humans can do that, and we don’t know how AI does it either. But if you show AI a piece of DNA, it can predict what the protein will look like. That’s incredible.”
