Türkiye heads to the polls on May 14. We’ll keep you informed of what’s happening in the country with our campaign updates. This week: Turkey is in bad shape economically, but President Recep Tayyip Erdogan appears to be starting a new culture war. Its target: the LGBTQ+ community.

Wat Erdogan en zijn politieke partners betreft, vormt de lhbtiq+-gemeenschap een bedreiging voor het traditionele gezin en daarmee voor Turkije.
De grote oppositiepartijen worden door de president weggezet als “lhbtiq+” en daarmee anti-Turks, bleek afgelopen week tijdens een campagnespeech.
“Jongeren: keer je niet af van het huwelijk”, zei Erdogan. “Luister niet naar die lhbtiq+’en. De CHP bestaat uit lhbtiq+’en, de IYI-partij bestaat uit lhbtiq+’en, de HDP bestaat uit lhbtiq+’en. Met de hulp van Allah staat onze alliantie pal voor het heilige huwelijkse verbond.”
Met zijn kritiek op de lhbtiq+-gemeenschap lijkt Erdogan de cultuurstrijd opnieuw te willen aanwakkeren als onderdeel van zijn campagne. Dat doet hij elke verkiezingsronde, maar niet eerder ging dat zo duidelijk over de rug van een bepaalde groep mensen.

Erdogan’s usual campaign strategy seems to have fizzled out
Erdogan has two main reasons for this. First, there is the deteriorating support for Erdogan and his party, the Justice and Development Party. That is why cooperation was sought with two small but radical parties: YRP and HÜDA PAR. Among other things, they want to amend the Women’s Protection Act and ban LGBTIQ+ associations. In his words, Erdogan seems to want to accommodate these parties and their supporters.
In addition, Erdogan is trailing in opinion polls by two weeks. His usual strategy didn’t seem to have the desired effect. As has been written before, the boss wants to be seen as someone who gets things done. That is why he wants to open a new building or be present at the start of a new project almost every day. That some of those projects are by no means permanent I finishIt doesn’t matter.
He will also bring a huge package of economic support measures during his campaign. According to Erdogan, Turkey does not suffer from high inflation, but pensions and minimum wages have recently been increased. In addition, the rent allowance was increased and the Turks got a discount on their gas bill.
Last Monday, tax benefits for the purchase of new company cars and cheap loans for the Turkish electric vehicle TOGG were added. All this does not yet guarantee that Erdogan can now count on additional votes in the polls.
