Marshall to open 2025 season in Georgia

Marshall will see how he compares to one of college football’s elite teams as the 2025 season begins.

Thundering Herd athletics director Christian Spears announced Wednesday that Marshall will travel to Georgia to face the Bulldogs at Sanford Stadium on Aug. 30, 2025, in what will be the season opener for both teams.

“This is who we want to be as a program – ready to stand with the best in the country,” Spears said. “College football is changing dramatically and Marshall deserves to be in the conversation with the best of the best. Our tradition, our story, our fans and our community deserve amazing experiences like the ones we will see at Georgia as we strive for national respect. We are Marshall not a cliché; we are a mindset. Point the ball!”

This will be the second game between Marshall and Georgia. The Bulldogs defeated the Hurds 13-3 in 2004 at Sanford Stadium.

Starting with the upcoming 2024 season, Marshall is scheduled to face five major college football programs over the next five years — Virginia Tech and Ohio State in September 2024, Penn State in 2026, and Wisconsin in 2028.

Marshall now has three of its four non-conference games filled for 2025 as it is also scheduled to welcome Missouri State in Week 2 and play at Middle Tennessee in Week 4 of that season.
