Gareth Southgate announced on Tuesday that he will leave his role as manager of the England men’s national team.

His decision comes after two days. England lose 2-1 to Spain in Euro 2024 final In Berlin.

Southgate spent eight years as England manager, managing 102 games.

“As a proud Englishman, it was an honour to play for and manage England. It meant everything to me and I gave my all.” He said Southgate, 53.

“But it was time for a change and a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my last game as England manager.”

Southgate has managed England at four major international tournaments, reaching the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the quarter-finals in Qatar two years ago.

But as England progressed through the tournament, Southgate regained the confidence of the majority of fans, particularly through his team’s tendency to perform heroically in the closing minutes of matches.

But England agonisingly failed to qualify for the final against Spain, becoming the first team ever to lose back-to-back European Championship finals.

“The squad we went to Germany with is full of exciting young talent and they can win the trophy we all dream of,” Southgate said.

“I am extremely proud of them and hope we can support the players and staff at St George’s Park and the FA who strive every day to improve English football and understand the power of football to drive positive change.”

According to the Football Association, St George’s Park is “home” to all 23 of England’s national football teams.

“We have the best fans in the world and their support means a lot to me. I am an England fan and I always will be,” Southgate added.

Southgate was appointed England manager in 2016 following the shock departure of Sam Allardyce. Southgate was a familiar face to many members of the senior national team after working with the Under-21s between 2013 and 2016.

As England manager, Southgate has won 62 of the 102 matches he has managed.

Prince William, chairman of the Football Association, thanked Southgate for all the work he has done as manager.

During his playing days, Southgate was a defender who played in the Premier League for Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough.

He won 57 caps, and his international career was particularly known for his decisive penalty save in the semi-final of Euro 1996 against Germany which resulted in England’s elimination from the tournament.

The FA’s chief executive Mark Bullingham said the organisation was “incredibly proud of everything Gareth and Steve have achieved for England and will be eternally grateful to them”.

“Gareth has made the impossible possible and has laid a solid foundation for future success. He is hugely respected by the players and staff, by everyone at The FA and across the football world.”

Bullingham added that the process of selecting a new coach for the England national team is underway.
