Dodgers' Shohei Otani enters 40s and 40s club with big win

LOS ANGELES — Shohei Otani entered the 40-40 club in style Friday night, hitting a game-winning home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to reach 40 home runs this season and lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 7-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Ohtani had stolen his 40th base earlier in the game, reaching it on a groundout at the top of the fourth inning, then stealing second base on a Freddie Freeman bunt.

After his goal, the Japanese star walked off the pitch to be applauded by 45,556 fans who stood up to greet him. His teammates sprayed Otani with water on the pitch.

Ohtani is the fastest player in major league history to reach 40-40, doing so in his 126th game of the season. The previous record was held by Alfonso Soriano, who reached 40-40 in 146 games with the Washington Nationals in 2006.

Ohtani is the sixth major league player to reach the milestone, and the first Dodgers player.

According to research by ESPN Stats & Information, Ohtani is on track to become the first player to score 50 hits and steal 50 bases in a single season in Major League Baseball history. No player has ever scored 45 hits and stolen 45 bases in a single season.

Friday’s strike was Otani’s first career win and his third Grand Slam title.
