Boston Red Sox star Jarren Duran suspended for two games for homophobic remarks

The Boston Red Sox and Major League Baseball have suspended outfielder Jarren Duran for two games after he made a homophobic slur at a fan during the team’s loss to the Houston Astros on Sunday.

Duran’s suspension will begin Monday’s game against the Texas Rangers. The Red Sox also announced that Duran’s salary from the suspension will be donated to the PFLAG Foundation (formerly known as Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays).

In the sixth inning of Boston’s game Sunday at Fenway Park, Duran turned in the middle of a batting line and said to a rioter, “Shut up, you motherfucker.”

Duran, 27, apologized in a statement issued Sunday evening for using “a really horrible word when responding to a fan.”

The suspension is in line with past MLB sanctions for homophobic language. In 2017, the league suspended Oakland Athletics player Matt Joyce for two games for using an insult against a fan. That same season, Toronto player Kevin Pillar was suspended for two games after he used a similar insult that Duran used against Atlanta player Jason Mote, who Pillar believed hit him on a fast pitch.

In 2012, Blue Jays center fielder Yunel Escobar was suspended for three games for wearing black eye patches with a homophobic slur in Spanish.

“During tonight’s game, I used a truly horrible word when responding to a fan,” Duran said in a statement released by the Red Sox on Sunday. “I am horrified because I know how many people I have offended and disappointed. I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization, but most importantly to the entire LGBT community. Our young fans are supposed to be able to look up to me as a role model, but tonight I failed to live up to that responsibility. I will use this opportunity to educate myself, my teammates, and grow as a person.”

Duran is having a phenomenal season with the Red Sox, who have lost four straight games to trail Kansas City by three games apiece for the American League lead. He was among the top 10 players in MLB in wins before being traded, and was batting .291/.350/.503 with 14 home runs and 29 stolen bases. Duran was named the All-Star Game MVP after hitting a home run in the fifth inning.

“We apologize to our fans, especially the LGBT community,” the Red Sox said in a statement. “We strive to be an organization that welcomes all fans to Fenway Park, and we will continue to educate our staff, players, coaches and employees on the importance of inclusion.”
