Five people were killed and at least five injured in a collision between a train and a bus in southwestern Slovakia. The cause of the accident is unknown.

The accident happened shortly after 5 p.m. in the town of Nove Zamky, about 110 kilometers (70 miles) east of the capital Bratislava. Images circulating on social media showed a fire at the front of the train. Passengers got off and were walking across the tracks away from the fire.

According to the Slovak Railways Service, the bus was severely damaged. The number of people on board the bus and their condition was not known.

The train was on its way from the Czech capital, Prague, to the Hungarian capital, Budapest. There were at least a hundred passengers on board. They are taken by bus to a village near the border with Hungary. There are no trains running between the two capitals at the present time.

I expressed my condolences

Police said that Slovak Interior Minister Istok was on his way to the scene.

President Pellegrini expressed his condolences to the relatives of the deceased. He did so from Brussels, where he is attending a summit of European leaders. “I wish a speedy recovery to the injured and thank the doctors and rescue teams for their work,” Pellegrini said. “I would like Slovakia to survive such disasters in the future.”
