An employee at a museum in Munich was fired for hanging his painting on the wall. At the Pinakothek der Moderne, his artworks were hung for eight hours among works by Pop Art icon Andy Warhol.
Last February, the 51-year-old smuggled out his painting early in the morning and hung it in the part of the museum where a Warhol exhibition was located at the time. Because of his position – he worked in the art department – he had access to the museum outside working hours. Therefore, he was able to hang the painting, which measures 60 x 120 cm, without raising security suspicions. It has been given a place on a blank white wall in the east wing of the museum.
The incident was not announced until yesterday. says a museum spokesman Watchman Museum staff quickly realized that the painting in question did not belong there. “The decision has been made to leave the artwork hanging while the exhibition is open and to remove it after it closes,” the spokesperson said.
“Hope for an artistic breakthrough”
German newspaper South German Zeitung According to reports based on police sources, the 51-year-old employee hopes for his “artistic achievement.” “He considers himself an artist, and most likely saw his role on the museum’s installation team as a daily task in support of his true calling,” a Pinakothek spokesman told the Guardian.
According to the spokesman, the artwork did not receive positive feedback from visitors, and thus did not achieve the desired achievement. The museum expelled the aspiring artist and also filed a complaint against him for intentional damage to property: he had drilled two small holes in the wall to hang his painting.
The Pinakothek der Moderne is one of the most important museums in Munich. The permanent collection contains more than 20,000 works, including paintings by Pablo Picasso, Max Beckmann and Paul Klee.
