A fast train collided with a slow train for unknown reasons. The pictures show a number of vehicles falling and being severely damaged. One of the vehicles ended up in a rice field.

The accident occurred about 500 meters from Cikalingka Station in Bandung. A spokesman for the Indonesian National Railways said that 28 people were taken to hospital for treatment.

The three dead were railway employees: the driver of the slow train, his assistant, and the conductor of the fast train.

Train accidents are more common in Indonesia, where the railways are very old. The government has allocated billions to improve the network.

In October, Southeast Asia’s first high-speed railway was opened in the country. This line connects Jakarta to Bandung, reducing travel time between the two cities from three hours to about half an hour.
