A Belgian man in his 30s was killed on a French highway around 5 am this morning. The man was injured in front of his wife and three children while trying to help the driver of another car that had an accident.
The man was returning from his vacation with his wife and three children (between 2 and 11 years old). On the A35 between Colmar and Strasbourg, he saw a car involved in an accident in the left lane. The thirty-year-old parked his car on his hard shoulder and rushed to the rescue with two French motorists who also stopped.
But another car, approaching at full speed, failed to identify the damaged car in the left lane in time. The two Frenchmen who had come out to offer help managed to jump away in time, but the Belgian man was hijacked by the car. He was unable to be resuscitated by the emergency services. His family from Brussels witnessed the tragedy and the firefighters took care of them.
The driver of the car that hit the man said he was driving at 130 kilometers per hour and was surprised because it was still dark. The victim of the first accident, a man in his twenties who was said to have fallen asleep, suffered a fractured pelvis. Firefighters took him to the hospital, but his condition is not life-threatening.
The highway was closed for three hours at the site of the accident.
