Vaughan Gething is resigning as First Minister of Wales. He was elected in March, but immediately came under fire over a controversial campaign donation. He will also step down as leader of the Welsh Labour Party.

Gething received a £200,000 donation from Dawson Environmental Group. The company is owned by a man who has twice been convicted of dumping waste in nature reserves. According to Gething, the donation was within the rules.

Call for refund

His party and other parties have called on Gething to return the donated money.

Four ministers, among others, have already left the Welsh government over the issue, saying they could not continue their work “without Gething’s resignation”. A non-binding vote of no confidence in him was passed last month.

In a statement, Gething described his departure as inevitable. “It has been a great honor to be able to do this work, even if only for a few months.”
