Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump announced on his social media platform Truth Social that he has appointed JD Vance as his new head of staff. Operating Fellow. That makes Vance, 39, also the vice presidential candidate.

Vance is an Ohio senator who served in the Army as a military journalist. In this role, he was deployed to Iraq. Vance first became known as the author of the book hillbilly elegyin which he describes growing up in a poor Ohio town where the white working class feels forgotten.

Ohio is located in what is called rust belt: The old industrial areas of the Northeast. In the previous election, many of the votes in the poor area went to Trump. With Vance as Operating Fellow Trump hopes to win these voters back.

The relatively inexperienced Vance has been in the Senate for nearly two years, where he has a clear conservative voice. For example, he supported a proposal to ban abortion nationwide. He has also introduced a bill to eliminate government diversity programs.

Vance has also spoken out against U.S. intervention in foreign conflicts. He is consistent in his opposition to aid to Ukraine.

Criticism of Trump’s policies

Early in his political career, Vance was highly critical of Trump and his policies. He called Trump “unfit” for the presidency and suggested he might be “the American Hitler.” During the 2016 election, which Trump eventually won, Vance did not vote for him.

The ambitious Vance has now made a 180-degree turn in his views. He is now considered one of Trump’s most loyal supporters. In his own words, he did not understand what an “effective leader” Trump was. Vance has also developed a good relationship with Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr.
