North Korea celebrated the 71st anniversary of the signing of the armistice in the Korean War. On that day, senior army officers used threatening words.

State news agency KCNA reported that Colonel Ri and Lieutenant Commander Yoo were ready to “totally destroy” North Korea’s enemies if their leader Kim Jong Un gave the order. According to Ri and Yu, hatred toward the United States and South Korea is growing. They also argue that the US is provoking nuclear war.

Talks between North Korea and the United States on reducing the number of nuclear weapons in North Korea have stalled since 2019. State media in the country write that whoever becomes the new US president, they expect the relationship to be strained.

On July 27, 1953, North Korea signed an armistice agreement with China and the United States. North Korea calls July 27 ‘Victory Day’; This day is not celebrated in South Korea. No treaty has been signed between North and South, meaning the two countries are still technically at war.

US summit with Japan and South Korea

US Defense Secretary Austin is scheduled to hold summit meetings with his counterparts in Japan and South Korea this weekend in Tokyo. Austin spoke with Defense Ministers Kihara (Japan) and Shin (South Korea). US Secretary of State Blinken participates in many of the conversations, as does a panel of top diplomats.

According to US media, Austin wants to change the command structure in Japan. For example, a new joint headquarters should be created so that Tokyo and Washington can better discuss the growing threats from China and North Korea.

The manufacturing of US missiles in Japan will also be discussed. There are about 50,000 US troops in Japan.
