The Organization of American States (OAS) did not recognize the election results in Venezuela. Venezuela’s electoral commission declared incumbent President Nicolás Maduro the winner yesterday, but the OAS says the results of Sunday’s vote are unreliable.

According to the OAS, the Electoral Commission’s actions demonstrate that it is in the hands of President Maduro. “These events confirm a concerted strategy to undermine the integrity of the electoral process.”

The OAS did not rule out a new presidential election due to the incomplete results provided by the Venezuelan Electoral Commission. These should then take place under the supervision of international observers.

The partnership – which has 35 member states – is meeting in the US capital Washington tomorrow for an emergency meeting to discuss the elections.

After the polls closed, the electoral commission gave Maduro 51 percent of the vote without making the tally public. The opposition is said to have won 44 percent of the vote and is suspected of rigging. Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado also claimed victory.

Many Latin American countries criticize the course of events and question Maduro’s victory. In response, the country announced yesterday that it would withdraw diplomatic staff in seven countries.

Ambassadors from Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Panama, Peru, Uruguay and the Dominican Republic must also leave their posts in Venezuela “immediately,” Venezuela’s foreign ministry said. According to a Venezuelan newspaper L Universal Flights to and from Panama and the Dominican Republic have also been suspended indefinitely from 8:00pm local time tomorrow evening.

Venezuela left the OAS in 2017 after increasing pressure from other American countries to hold early elections and release political prisoners. Within the organization, there have already been calls for Venezuela to be expelled from the organization. Fourteen member states, including the United States, Mexico, Canada and Brazil, were in favor at the time.
