Sjoerd den Daas will be the new NOS correspondent in Washington. Ten Das is currently working as a correspondent for NOS in Beijing. His first big job in the US involved the presidential election in November.

Ten Das, 37, started at NOS in 2019 as a correspondent for China and the rest of East Asia. Prior to that, he was active in the area for several years for other clients. He will leave Beijing in August and return to the Netherlands for a few months before heading to Washington.

“In recent years, I’ve been able to report with great joy and passion from a fascinating region. It’s not always easy, but it’s rarely been boring.” It won’t be boring in America any time soon, thinks Ten Das. “I consider it a tremendous honor and privilege to be able to strengthen the experienced NOS team in Washington.”

Giselle van Cann, editor-in-chief of NOS News, praised Ten Das’ work in China. “In recent years, Sjoerd has taken our audience into the microcosm of Chinese society. He has, at times with courage and tenacity, created human stories while providing insight into the larger connections in the world. He takes that knowledge and experience with him to the United States, as well as to China, and to the rest of the world. making an impact.”

For example, Ten Das traveled through the Chinese province of Xinjiang in 2020. There, as he continued to be shadowed by the authorities, he made a statement about the Uyghurs:

An unprecedented mass prevention campaign

Sjord den Das will be succeeded by Laura von Meegan in Beijing. It was already announced last December.

The Balkans

There has been a change among the NOS correspondents in Europe: Greece correspondent Thijs Ketenis will now also cover the Balkans and therefore become correspondent for South-Eastern Europe. He succeeds David-John Gottfried, who stood down as reporter in August last year for health reasons.

Ketenis’ field of work is certainly not new: he has been writing about the Balkans for Trove and AD for more than ten years, and in a previous job he was already stationed in Belgrade.
