Samsung and Google’s Mixed Reality Platform to Launch Before Year’s End – Games – News

The South Korean manufacturer says Samsung and Google’s XR platform will launch before the end of the year. The two companies announced a year and a half ago that they would work together on a headset. Qualcomm is providing the SoC for the platform, which will likely be a headset.

This is the first time that Samsung mentions a specific date Which product should be launched for. Samsung, Qualcomm, and Google have announced a collaboration in early 2023 to work on a mixed reality device.

In the summer of that year, Samsung reportedly decided to delay the headset to better compete with the Apple Vision Pro. It’s not yet clear what kind of headset the companies are working on; in practice, mixed reality often means a mix of augmented and virtual reality, where the real world can be viewed through a VR headset.

Samsung is making the device, Google is supplying the software, and Qualcomm is supplying the SoC. The chip designer has already announced the SoC it will use. It’s still unknown what the headset will look like. Google has had its own headsets for a long time under the names Daydream and Cardboard, and Samsung has had Gear VR for years. Both systems work by integrating smartphones into the headset, with lenses that make the smartphone’s image suitable for close-up viewing.
