Richard Groenendijk, 51, recently underwent surgery to remove the bags under his eyes. Although the eyelid correction was not initially successful, Richard candidly shares his experiences and the accompanying before-and-after photos. In collaboration with plastic surgeon Wouter van der Put, he tells the whole story in the podcast “De Leeuw Lult Verder”.
“I thought the repair would be simple, but I had four stitches all around my eye.”
He had previously said on the same podcast that he had the procedure because of the negative comments he received after appearing on television. “Every time I was watching TV I would hear, ‘You look tired.’ I thought that was an absolutely ridiculous comment,” he said at the time.
This time, host Paul De Leeuw reveals on the podcast that Richard’s first operation didn’t go quite according to plan. Richard quickly corrects him and says he wants to tell the whole story himself. However, according to the comedian, it is important to note that lower eyelid correction is a complex procedure that involves much more than just correcting the upper eyelid.
“The upper eyelid correction is relatively straightforward, but the lower eyelid correction is much more complicated,” Richard explains. After the operation, he developed what’s called ectropion, a condition in which the lower eyelid turns outward. “I was in complete panic,” he recalls. At first, Wouter thought the problem would resolve itself.
Plastic surgery is not always predictable, explains Futter. “The difference between my work and that of a visual artist is that living tissue can always react differently than you expect,” he says. “A good plastic surgeon knows how to react when things don’t go as planned.”
Richard’s complication, which is the separation of the lower eyelid due to scarring, is rare but serious. “Lower eyelid correction is a complex procedure,” explains Futter. “You’re dealing with skin, muscle and fatty tissue. In Richard’s case, the scar reaction caused a droopy eyelid, which is the most feared complication of this procedure.”

Richard had to undergo surgery again a few days later to resolve the complications. The second operation was more radical and Richard describes the recovery as extremely difficult. “I thought it would be a simple repair, but I had four stitches all over my eye and even stitches in my cheek,” he says. “I looked like a doll.”
Although Richard was very shocked by the results of his first procedure, he is grateful for Wouter’s prompt response and the final result. His story emphasizes the importance of thorough preparation, realistic expectations, and the need to choose an experienced plastic surgeon.
