Leonard and Meggie first visited the hospital’s Silence Center to light a candle for their daughter. Leonard explains that they are currently very emotional again over the loss. “We’re surfing through the days, as it were. We’ve just had the anniversary of her death and her funeral. Then we’re really in the deep end of the wave. Everything hurts. The homesickness is always there. Now we’re slowly coming out of the valley and also seeing the beautiful things in life again.”

After visiting the Center of Silence, the doctors inform Leonard and Meggie that the room where Sammy died is free. They decided to go down. As soon as the parents enter the hospital room, they become emotional. “The place stays charged,” says Lennard. According to Sami’s mother, the room looked as if it no longer had a “soul.” “Her final resting place.”

The parents then pass by the room where they received the bad news about Sami. Meggie still remembers every detail. She says doctors declared Sami incurable the day after the bad news. “On Valentine’s Day,” she adds. “She wouldn’t have survived because she was more than 80 percent brain dead. Because the bacteria were moving so fast.”

Meggie was 45 years old when Sammy was born. Becoming a mother was her greatest wish. “I was 44 when I met Leonard. (…) Then it turned out I was pregnant six months later. So that was a really big gift, because I had always wanted children. But I always thought, after my 40s: Well, it’s done.” that.” Leonard already has two children from his previous relationship.

It hurts Meggie deeply that she will never be called “Mom” again. Sami’s doctor told her: “You are a mother forever. Sami’s love is still there. I see that too.”
