Morocco has significantly increased its natural gas imports from Spain in 2024. Exports to Morocco now represent 18.5% of total Spanish gas exports, while in June 2022 this share was only 0.1%.

Electricity exports to Morocco have also increased significantly over the past 12 months, reaching 9,338 gigawatt-hours, 155 times more than in June 2022. This is equivalent to about 800 million cubic meters of gas, according to reports. winpopole.

This increase in gas exports to Morocco comes in the wake of the closure of the Maghreb-Europe (GME) gas pipeline via Algeria in October 2021. Morocco has since turned to Spain to take advantage of its gas liquefaction infrastructure and import liquefied natural gas (LNG), which is then transported to Morocco via pipeline.

Algeria has threatened to terminate its gas contract with Spain if Algerian gas ends up in Morocco. However, Spanish authorities have confirmed that none of its gas supplies will be diverted to Morocco. A special plan has been put in place to prevent this.
