Instagram is introducing a button to mute everyone except close friends

Instagram is expanding its existing Borders feature. Users can now choose to only show interactions from close friends. Interactions from other users are blocked.

The boundary function has been around for several years and everyone can use it. This feature identifies interactions with people the user follows, as well as past followers. This means that only replies to posts, clips, stories, messages, tags, and mentions from these users are displayed.

The feature is now being expanded further to block all interactions except those of close friends the edge. Users can tag their close friends in the app. When the Limits feature is enabled, users will only receive private messages, tags, and mentions from this group. Others can still respond to public messages that are posted, for example, or give them a Like, but the user will not see those interactions. People outside your close friends list also don’t know that their content is hidden.

The limits feature can run for a maximum of four weeks, after which it can be extended. The option is in the settings menu of the app.
