Eva Hocke will send a personal response to all 3,000 De Volkskrant readers who have sent her an email of support in recent weeks, the journalist and columnist said on Sunday on the radio programme De Perstribune.

Hawkey wrote in an article two weeks ago that the paper was saying goodbye to her after nearly a decade. The paper does this because, the editor says, sometimes you have to make room for new voices. Hawkey disagrees. She has received a lot of sweet emails and letters from readers in recent weeks.

“It’s been loud and joyful on social media, on my phone and in my inbox,” Hockey told NPO Radio 1. She has received 3,000 personal messages and emails from people. “I will 100,000 percent email all of these people. They are all making an effort to let me know. But it may take a while, I will say that. I also have a family to manage and a laundry to do. . . But there will be an answer.”

Hoeke has also received all sorts of offers for new jobs and work. But she doesn’t want to go into detail about this. “Fortunately, my partner Marcel van Roosmalen and I have a theatre show that will run throughout the autumn. But actually, after that I have to get back to work.”

The journalist dedicated her last column in Volkskrant to the “bad news conversation” she had with the editor. The contribution was widely shared on social media. Many readers said they did not understand why Höcke had to leave the field.
