A German national was sentenced to death in Belarus last month. The 29-year-old man, Rico Krieger, was reportedly convicted of multiple crimes, including terrorism and mercenary activities.

This is the first time anyone has been convicted of mercenary activities in the country, He writes Belarusian human rights organization Viasna, which first reported Krieger’s death sentence.

According to the organization, Krieger worked for the German Red Cross. He is also said to have worked as an armed security guard at the US embassy in Berlin. Reuters reported that the man’s LinkedIn page includes a photo of him next to a Ukrainian flag.

Opposition to the death penalty

The German Foreign Ministry says it is aware of the case and says it is in close contact with Belarusian authorities over the German’s fate.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the embassy in Minsk are providing consular support to the person concerned and are working intensively with the Belarusian authorities on his behalf.” The ministry also says it strongly opposes the death penalty.

According to Viasna, the trial was largely held behind closed doors. Belarusian authorities reportedly accused Krieger of causing the explosion. The so-called Kalininsky Regiment, made up of Belarusian exiles who fought against Russia in Ukraine, is also said to play a role in the case.

On June 24, Krieger was sentenced to death by firing squad. There is uncertainty about his fate. Belarusian authorities have not yet commented on the case.

Belarus is the only country in Europe that still applies the death penalty.
