Frenkie de Jong will not come to America

Frenkie de Jong will not attend training camp with FC Barcelona, the Catalan club officially announced on Sunday. Ash The midfielder’s disappearance was already reported a few days ago. De Jong, along with Flick and the medical staff, have come to the conclusion that his ankle isn’t good enough to go to training camp in the United States. Flick and the medical staff are confident the midfielder will continue his recovery from injury at Barcelona.

De Jong struggled with a number of ankle complaints last season. Shortly after his return, things went wrong again on April 21 in a brawl with Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde. De Jong missed the rest of the season in LaLiga, but was hopeful of his European Championship participation.

De Jong was included in the provisional European Championship squad and given special status by national coach Ronald Koeman. De Jong would have been part of the final European Championship squad if there were signs that he could play later in the tournament, but it soon became clear that was not a viable option.

There was hope that De Jong could have made the start of the new season easier, but there has been no serious progress in the meantime. This was evident from Koeman’s words, among others. “He is worried. He has a serious injury and we have to wait and see how everything goes,” the national coach said at a golf tournament last week.

Sprained ankles have a rehabilitation period of six to eight weeks, but that period is long gone now. Even now it is uncertain whether De Jong will be there on August 17 when Barcelona open the new season in La Liga against Valencia.

Pedri, Gavi, Ronald Araújo and Ansu Fati will also not go to America. All four are still injured, as is De Jong.

Barcelona competes with Manchester City, Real Madrid and AC Milan on American soil. Back in Barcelona, the match with AS Monaco for the Joan Camper Trophy continues on August 12. La Liga’s new season kicks off on August 17 in an away game against Valencia.
