Fire completely destroyed two houses in Djaluweg

On the night of Saturday to Sunday, two houses in Djallweg, Suriname, were completely destroyed by fire.

The fire broke out at about 1:45 a.m. in an unoccupied all-wood back home and quickly spread to a stone house in the front where eight people were staying.

The stone house is home to BB, 60, her elderly mother and six children. All residents were home at the time of the fire.

When BB discovered the fire in the uninhabited wooden house, she immediately woke up her housemates and took them to safety. But because the fire spread so quickly, the family was unable to save any of their belongings.

Both houses were completely burned, and two adjacent buildings were severely damaged.

The fire brigade quickly arrived at the scene, and after great effort, they were able to control the sea of fire. Fortunately, there were no personal accidents.

The wooden house, which is likely where the fire started, was not inhabited. Both houses were connected to the EBS electricity network, but were not insured against fire.

De Nieuwe Grond police are investigating, but the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
