EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has moved the next meeting of EU foreign ministers from Budapest to Brussels, in a move intended to underscore that he believes Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán has gone too far in his self-proclaimed “peace mission.”

Hungary has been the EU’s interim president since July 1, and Orbán has immediately begun making international visits. Under the guise of a “peace mission for Ukraine,” he has visited Chinese President Xi, Russian President Putin, and former US President Trump. He has given the impression that he speaks on behalf of the EU, which has certainly not been well received by other member states.

Today, all foreign ministers met in Brussels for the first time since Orbán’s actions. Some countries have already expressed their disgust, but there has been no collective signal so far. The next meeting was scheduled for Budapest in August, but Borrell has now moved that meeting to Brussels.

Borrell stressed that as the EU’s top diplomat, he is responsible for planning the meetings and therefore has the authority to decide on them. He described it as a “symbolic decision” to make clear to Hungary that the country is not loyal enough to the EU’s joint decisions.

The meeting after that will be in Budapest again.
