The Austrian government currently remains in place, despite the violent political conflict between the two coalition parties. However, ÖVP Nehammer spoke of a “serious violation of trust” caused by Green Party Minister Goessler, who approved the EU Nature Restoration Act against the will of the conservative party.

“This is not what citizens should expect from politicians,” Nehammer said in a television statement. He stressed that the situation was dangerous enough to topple the government. But after internal consultation it was decided not to do so. The Chancellor stated that he did not want to plunge the country “into chaos” unnecessarily. Regular parliamentary elections are scheduled for September.

Lawsuits announced

The ÖVP accused Environment Minister Goesler of abusing his position. In Luxembourg, despite resistance from its coalition partner, it accepted European natural law, which helped it obtain a majority.

According to Nehammer, Goessler acted unconstitutionally because she would not have voted on behalf of the country. In addition to the criminal case in Austria, his party will also go to the European Court of Justice to annul the vote.

“Brave decision”

Goessler maintains that she acted within the law. Her party explains that voting against it became possible because two of the nine states have rolled back the European Recovery Act. This concerns the states of Vienna and Carinthia.
