Samsung wants to make new phones that are “radically different”

Samsung wil telefoons

Samsung, the leading company in the phone market, is planning to develop new smartphones that will be radically different from the current ones. Artificial intelligence should be central to this new generation of phones.

Roh Tae-moon, president of Samsung Mobile, told the newspaper, Australian Financial Review The company is spending most of its development budget on AI-powered smartphones. He doesn’t mean phones, like the Galaxy S24, that already have AI features but are still just smartphones.

Roh says these phones will feature “radically different” hardware than existing phones. The Samsung CEO wouldn’t elaborate on what kind of hardware it would involve. According to the Australian Financial Review , these phones could feature more sensors and larger, foldable displays to better interact with artificial intelligence.

Samsung is obsessed with AI

The South Korean company has been focusing heavily on AI for some time. Earlier this year, it unveiled the Galaxy S24 smartphones. These devices can translate phone conversations in real time, have smart keyboards to help you type, and have all sorts of AI features, such as photo editing and video adjustments.

Samsung is also investing heavily in AI in wearables, like earbuds and smartwatches. Roh likely refers to different devices working closely together to make the AI experience seamless. Until Samsung announces more, the company’s plans are still just speculation.

New version of Bixby

This year we’ve already seen two AI gadgets that look completely different from a smartphone: the Humane AI Pin and the Rabbit R1, and both of them turned out to be unsuccessful.

One of the AI improvements Samsung wants to implement soon is an AI version of its Bixby voice assistant. The smarter Bixby will be added to One UI 7.0 on recent Samsung phones.
