Seven people died in a fire at an apartment in the French city of Nice last night. Three young children were among the victims. Authorities suspect the fire was started deliberately.

The fire broke out last night at around 2:30 a.m. in the Moulins area southwest of Nice. Dozens of people were taken to safety by emergency services. Three people remain in hospital, one seriously, according to the fire department.

A family lives in the apartment on the seventh floor. The children who died are: According to the regional newspaper Nice Matin 5, 7 and 10 years old. Even a 17 year old boy would not have survived. Two people are said to have escaped the fire through the window.

The Nice prosecutor says a “criminal” cause is being considered. Based on initial evidence, an investigation has been opened into arson that led to the death.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin Talking about X “It was a terrible drama,” he said, adding that more casualties were prevented thanks to the quick intervention of the fire brigade.

The fire brigade responded to the fire with 25 fire engines and 72 firefighters. They put out the fire around 7 a.m. BFM TV reports.

The French channel also reported that the fire may not have started on the seventh floor, but at the bottom of the stairs.
