Hundreds of people arrived at the grave of the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny on Sunday to bid farewell. Pictures show a large queue in front of the cemetery.
People leave flowers, say goodbye and are sad. Navalny’s mother, Lyudmila Navalnaya, and the widow’s mother, Yulia Navalnaya, also visited. On Saturday, they also visited the resting place of their deceased brother-in-law.
The sea of flowers around Navalny’s grave has become so high that the headstone can barely be seen. “I have never seen so many flowers at the cemetery,” wrote Kira Yarmysh, a spokeswoman for Navalny’s team. X. She thanks everyone for coming.
There was also a lot of interest on Friday and Saturday
Navalny was buried on Friday, amid great interest, in a Moscow cemetery. Thousands of his supporters came to pay their last respects to him.
Although the funeral in Moscow was peaceful, the atmosphere was tense. The police were present en masse at the scene and searched passers-by. A journalist said that officers wearing helmets and carrying tear gas canisters were patrolling the area. Dozens were arrested elsewhere in Russia.
Also on Saturday, the day after the funeral, many people visited Navalny’s grave to bid him farewell.
Navalny died last month at the age of 47 in a concentration camp. His widow holds President Vladimir Putin responsible for her husband’s death, as do many Western countries. She announced that she would continue his work.
