The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was not extended on Friday morning after the deadline of 6 a.m. (Dutch time) passed. Israel announced that it would resume fighting in Gaza, the Israeli news agency reported Reuters.
The news agency reported that the Israeli army accuses Hamas of not adhering to the truce. The Israeli army says Hamas fired a missile at Israel before the deadline.
Both sides reported that fighting broke out again before six o’clock on Friday morning (Dutch time). The Israeli army said that it intercepted a missile launched from the Gaza Strip, and Hamas media reported about gunfire and explosions in northern Gaza.
There was also an attack in Jerusalem on Thursday morning, for which Hamas claimed responsibility later in the day. The two men who opened fire at a bus station are believed to belong to Hamas. Two women and a man were killed. According to the armed movement, this was in response to the actions of the Israeli army in the West Bank and the treatment of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons.
The ceasefire was extended for at least one day on Thursday. Israel did so “in light of the mediators’ efforts to continue the hostage release process, and in accordance with the terms of the agreement.”
Suggested in an editorial Al Jazeera The extension of the ceasefire cannot be separated from the presence of US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in Israel. “There is an unwritten rule in Israeli diplomacy that no major developments occur when a senior American official comes, whether military or political.”
The truce lasted six days
The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas came into effect on Friday, November 24. The two sides agreed to lay down their arms for at least four days. Women and children will be released from both sides. Humanitarian and medical aid was also allowed to enter the Gaza Strip.
The cessation of fighting was extended for two days on Monday and one day on Thursday. More Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners will be released at that time.
During the ceasefire, more than 240 Palestinian prisoners and more than a hundred hostages from Israel and other countries were released.
