In the United Kingdom, baby Indie Gregory, who was seriously ill and was the subject of a high-profile lawsuit between hospitals and her parents, died. She died last night in hospice after doctors stopped her treatment.
Eight-month-old Indy had an incurable congenital genetic disease. As a result, her cells did not produce energy and her muscles did not develop normally. She had been on a ventilator in a Nottingham hospital since her birth.
Over time, her doctors decided there was no point in continuing treatment, in part because of the pain. Her parents objected to this, but the Supreme Court rejected it.
The parents then contacted the government in Italy, where any form of euthanasia and ending of life is illegal. The Meloni government granted the request and granted Indi Italian citizenship, with the hope that she would eventually be treated in Italy.
However, the judges also rejected the transfer to Italy, as they believed it was not in India’s interest. She was not allowed to return home either. After the final ruling in the case was issued last Friday, she was transferred to the nursing home.
“Angry and heartbroken”
She died there last night shortly before 2 a.m. in her mother’s arms, her father said in a statement. British media. The parents are “angry, devastated and ashamed.” “The healthcare system and the courts not only deprived Indy of the opportunity to live longer, they also deprived her of her dignity to die in the family home where she belonged.”
Italian Prime Minister Meloni also responded to Indi’s death. “We did everything we could. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough. Have a safe trip, little Indy,” she wrote on X.
