Proton introduces a desktop application for the Proton Drive encrypted cloud storage service. This will be available for Windows 10 and 11. macOS and Linux versions will follow later. Until now, the service was only available on desktop devices via web browsers, iOS and Android.

Proton Drive for Windows is immediately available for download. Proton CEO Andy Yen reports on Wednesday. The app allows users to easily upload their files from their desktop or laptop computer to Proton Drive. Among other things, it will be possible to automatically backup certain files.

The service will have the ability to sync files between multiple devices and support for offline downloads. The service also has a version history feature, which allows users to download older versions of files. It should provide protection against ransomware. Files uploaded to Proton Drive are end-to-end encrypted.

Proton is also starting beta for macOS. It will initially be available to Proton Lifetime users. Proton Visionary subscribers will receive an invitation to this beta later. After the macOS version is available to everyone, the company will start developing a Linux application.

Proton Drive is available for free to anyone with a Proton email account, with a maximum cloud storage capacity of 1GB. There are also plans that offer 200GB and 500GB of cloud storage, which are available for €5 and €13 per month, respectively. The 500GB plan also includes access to paid Proton VPN servers and paid features for Proton Mail, Calendar, and Pass.
