Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for her struggle against the oppression of women in Iran and her struggle to promote human rights and freedom for all.
In total, the Iranian regime arrested Mohammadi thirteen times, convicted him five times and sentenced him to 31 years in prison and 154 lashes. Mohammadi also remains in prison.
In September 2022, Mahsa Gina Amini was killed while in the custody of Iran’s morality police. This led to the largest political demonstrations against the Iranian regime since it came to power in 1979.
The organization wants to honor her struggle
Under the slogan “Women – Life – Freedom”, hundreds of thousands of Iranians participated in peaceful protests. According to the organization that awards the Peace Prize, the slogan reflects “Mohammadi’s dedication and work.”
The organization wrote: “Mohammadi is a woman, a human rights lawyer and a freedom fighter. By awarding her the Nobel Peace Prize this year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee wants to honor her courageous struggle for human rights, freedom and democracy in Iran.”
“This year’s Peace Prize also honors the hundreds of thousands of people who demonstrated over the past year against the theocratic regime’s policies of discrimination and oppression against women.”
Choosing the Peace Prize was difficult
In times of major wars in Europe, coups in Africa, and tensions and conflicts in large parts of the world, observers say it is difficult to choose. “The sad reality is that there will not be much peacemaking in 2023,” said Dan Smith, president of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.
Since 1901, the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded nineteen times. The Red Cross received the Peace Prize during World Wars I and II, but otherwise the committee saw no reason to award the prize.
But there does not have to be a world war for awards not to be awarded. After World War I, for example, the situation in Europe in particular was so tense and hostile that no peace prize was awarded for three years in the 1920s.
Almost all winners have been announced
Almost all Nobel Prize winners have now been announced. The Nobel Prize in Economics will follow only on Monday.
The Nobel Prize in Medicine on Monday went to researchers who developed an mRNA vaccine against Corona. A study of extremely fast flashes of light was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics on Tuesday. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry went to research into quantum dots on Wednesday. Norwegian writer John Foss won the Nobel Prize for Literature on Thursday.
The winners not only receive recognition, but can also hand out a cash prize worth more than €950,000. They also receive a medal and a diploma. All prizes will be awarded on December 10. It is the anniversary of the death of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, after whom the awards are named.
