Hidden cameras have been found at two scout camps in Belgium. For example, a hidden camera was discovered in an outdoor toilet at a camp in Liège in early July. One was found in a shower at a camp in Beringen (Belgian Limburg) on Friday. Police are investigating what happened at both camps.
It is not known if the two are related. The police were notified about the cameras and an investigation has been launched.
Several Belgian media outlets including the Belgian newspaper The standard I write that the camp management in Beringen does not want to respond. According to the newspaper, the umbrella organization FOS Open Scouting confirms the discovery of the camera, but says it is still unclear who placed it and whether scouts or children were filmed. The local police confiscated the camera, but did not share any further information today.
The families of the children participating in the camp were informed. Everyone returned home last Friday, three days before the camp was due to end, due to feeling unsafe.
SD card and power bank
More is known about the camera found in Liège. The device was found in an outdoor toilet and was equipped with an SD card. A power bank was also found to record long-term images. It was placed by a 16-year-old member of a scout group from Leuven. His parents were informed to pick it up immediately.
The camp in Liège was already in early July. It is still unclear what the boy’s intentions were and what the consequences would be for him.
