Russia has issued an arrest warrant for the widow of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who died in custody earlier this year. Yulia Navalnaya is accused of involvement in an extremist organization.

Navalnaya, 47, lives in Berlin and has not visited Russia for some time. The decision means she would be immediately arrested if she travels to Russia.

Yulia Navalnaya flew from Germany to Moscow with her husband Navalny in January 2021. He had been treated there after being poisoned with the nerve agent Novichok by an FSB agent in Russia.

Upon his arrival in Moscow, Navalny was immediately arrested at the airport. She was later also arrested during a demonstration against his imprisonment, but was released the same day. She then left for Germany again.

Navalny was never released. He died in a remote prison camp in February and was buried in Moscow. Navalnaya has said she wants to continue her husband’s work.

“When you write about this, please don’t forget to write the most important thing: Vladimir Putin is a murderer and a war criminal,” she wrote.

“His place is in prison, not somewhere in The Hague, in a comfortable cell with a TV, but in Russia. In the same (penal) colony and the same 2×3 meter cell in which Alexei was killed.”
