Commanders coach Dan Quinn explained this week that Free-kick taker Riley Patterson’s job was in jeopardy. After missing two field goals in last week’s preseason game, the Chiefs are now on the move.
The Browns are trading Cade York to the Commanders for a conditional seventh-round pick, according to Albert Breer of SI.com.
The Browns decided that Dustin Hopkins had won the kicker competition with York, and they would get something for him now rather than putting him on waivers next week during final roster cuts and getting nothing in return. Conditional deals like this typically mean the Browns would get the pick if York becomes the Commanders’ starting kicker in the regular season.
York was originally traded to the Browns as a fourth-round pick in 2022 but was cut in favor of Hopkins before the start of the 2023 season. York then spent time briefly with the Titans and Giants in 2023 before signing for a second stint with the Browns this offseason. Now he’ll have a good chance to overtake Patterson for the Commanders’ starting kicker job.
The Commanders thought they had solved their kicking problem when they signed Brandon McMinnus in the offseason, giving him a $1.5 million signing bonus to play in Washington. But when McMinnus was accused of sexual assault in a civil lawsuit, the Commanders cut him. That left them in a mess to find a replacement, and Patterson hasn’t proven up to the task. They’re hoping York can do the job.
