Sam Houston State University’s Department of Criminal Justice will host its busiest day of the year on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. the annual Honors Day.
The event will begin at 11 a.m. with the Leadership Luncheon, which will recognize outstanding students, alumni and friends of the CJ Center.
There will be specific, distinguished alumni selected by a committee who will be honored by the department.
“This event is for the students,” Communication Officer Beth Kuhles said. “This event is not really to highlight the faculty.”
The luncheon portion of the event is by invitation only.
Following the luncheon will be the Sundial Ceremony in front of the center, which will honor officers whose lives were lost in the line of duty.
Flowers will be placed by the flagpole in honor of the fallen officers.
The ceremonial portion will be from 1:30 to 2 p.m.
After the ceremony, the Honors Convocation will be in the Killinger Auditorium at 7 p.m.
107 scholarships and about 170 honors will be awarded at the convocation to exceptional, full-time students with academic honors and a minimum 3.67 GPA.
According to Kuhles, over 600 people are expected to attend the convocation portion.
“I look forward to the pride on the faces of parents, faculty and donors as they see what the students have accomplished,” Kuhles said.
The convocation portion of the event is by invitation only.
