Sam Houston State University’s Department of Leadership Initiatives will host the annual Volunteer Opportunities and Student Organizations Fair in the Lowman Student Center Mall Area today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Over 31 organizations will be promoted, including Kats for Christ, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Bearkats for Life, Sociology Club, Nakama Anime Society, Beso, National Residence Hall Honorary, Food Pantry, SHSU CVA and Ballet Folklorico.
As for volunteer opportunities, 12 agencies including The Breast Cancer Charities of America, St. Joseph Hospice, H.E.A.R.T.S. Veterans Museum and CASA of Walker County will be at the fair.
The fair will be run by Program Specialist Emily Snider and Student Assistant Brandon Nerios.
“[This event] has been very successful in the past,” Nerios said. “Lots of students know about Greek Life because [it is] very apparent on campus, but there are some that nobody really knows about.”
Snider is in charge of the volunteer opportunities portion and Nerios handles the student organizations.
According to Nerios, some organizations will hand out lanyards, pins and flyers to help interest students.
“We are very excited for [the fair],” Nerios said. “Service and student [involvement] is a big part of our motto here, so it is great to see it come together.”
