In order to get students and staff ready for this year’s Battle of Piney Woods, Sam Houston State University will host their annual pep rally, Firefest tomorrow in Bower Stadium at 8 p.m.
This upcoming Saturday, will mark the 91st game between Sam Houston State and Steven F. Austin Universities. SHSU has won the last five Piney Woods games and plan to continue this streak.
Since there is construction on campus the location of the annual Firefest has been changed. Prep rally coordinator, Steven Begnaud said Firefest will be missing some of the events like the can food drive and the bond fire, but the spirit cannot be taken away.
“The construction won’t stop us from having a great pep rally,” Begnaud said.
Begnaud also said he hopes to bring the missing events back next year when the construction situation has changed.
At Firefest, tickets will be handed out to the first 500 students to get free food. Along with free food, 1000 t-shirts will be given out and they will have a contest for one student to win an iPad Pro.
The all-girl cheer team will be in the stands looking for the most spirited students to get a chance to win the iPad Pro. Once the students have been chosen they will be brought onto the field for a competition between them. The winner of the competition will receive the iPad Pro.
Along with the prizes there will be a large firework display presented by ProFX. While the firework show is going off, there will be a large presentation on the video board. The SHSU band will be putting on a performance during Firefest as well.
The President of the university, Dana Hoyt is scheduled to speak at the prep rally. Faculty members will be handing out promotional information and possibly having tables set up for different organizations.
