Students in the Sam Houston State University Bachelor of Fine Arts Art Program are displaying some of their latest work at the Student Satellite Gallery. The exhibition is one of several senior shows that will be displayed throughout the rest of the semester.
Entitled “Daughters,” the exhibit features work by three seniors: Bailey Jo Carlson, Justine Chauvin and Tiffany Stockton.
Rebecca Finley, associate professor of photography, said the theme of “Daughters” is centered around family and relationships.
“These three artists attempt to explore their identities through relationships, built and destroyed, between family members and friendships,” Finley said. “In an attempt to gain their own personal individuality, they investigate the identity of significant people in their lives in order to piece together who they are away from them. Through photography, painting and mixed media, each artist takes a unique approach to this concept.”
Finley said this show is part of her Business of Art: Professional Practices class and that the students took on the responsibility of handling the entire show, with preparation beginning long before this semester.
“Students have been working through their college careers for this final capstone experience,” Finley said. “They must propose an exhibition which I approve and then they work together to decide what will be in the exhibition and how they will present their work in the space.”
Finley hopes the experience with this exhibit will leave her students feeling confident in their abilities to put together a show and present it to the public. She believes this will help them after graduation when they seek careers in the professional art world.
“My goal is that students walk away feeling like they can successfully present a professional exhibition and gallery talk,” Finley said. “This class gives students a real life experience and provides a venue for the community to see what art students are creating. The exhibition gives students the confidence to seek professional exhibitions once they graduate.”
“Daughters” will be held in the Student Satellite Gallery located at 1216 University Ave. Gallery hours are Thursday through Saturday from 12-5 p.m.
There will be an opening reception tonight from 6-8 p.m. in conjunction with the department of art’s 16th Annual Juried Student Exhibition reception, which takes place at the 3G Gallery from 5-7 p.m.
