Aww the sweet smell of BBQ and cultural interaction, what could be better? This Saturday, the Office of International Programs and MISS will be hosting a welcome picnic complete with food, games, music, and dancing for all of the returning international students, students new to the program, and all the volunteers that help out with the international program.
The picnic will be held from 1 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Sam Houston State University Camp, near the intersection of Hwy 19 and FM 980 in Riverside. Wally Barnes will be the DJ and Rec Sports will provide outdoor games. Lunch will be served at 12:00 noon and will consist of a little Texas culture: barbeque beef, chicken, potato salad, cole slaw, and baked beans.
“Our department works with all of our international students outside of the United States who wish to come to the United States in order to obtain a U.S. degree from Sam Houston State,” said Patricia Herrington, International Student & Scholar Advisor and coordinator of the picnic. “We also coordinate Study Abroad which is an exchange agreement with universities around the world for students who are not seeking a degree, but wish to receive college credit while studying overseas for a semester or two.”
Every year the International Program and MISS host a variety of cultural events for the students including the upcoming Cultural Diversity Week. “I think we are really making great strides for everybody to understand each other’s cultures and not be so closed minded, but to be more open-minded to what’s out in the world, not just what you see on CNN,” said Herrington.
